about yfa online

Thanks to Heritage Lottery Fund support we are making 50 hours of footage from our collections available online via our new interactive moving image website – YFA Online.

YFA Online was launched on Monday 23rd November 2009 packed with 21 hours of fascinating films, background information and images showcasing Yorkshire’s rich heritage.  But this is just the beginning; YFA Online will have over 50 hours of film freely available online by summer 2010, that’s hundreds of films capturing our regions rich heritage over the last 100 years.  We will be adding new films on a regular basis so there will always be something new to see.

the films you want to see

YFA Online is not simply another online resource; We have been working closely with our partners across the region including the National Media Museum in Bradford, Hull History Service, Showroom cinema in Sheffield and Rural Arts North Yorkshire to ensure YFA Online contains what the people of Yorkshire want to see and by summer 2010 each partner will have a YFA Online permanent access point open to the public.

Based on the knowledge of the Archive’s currently accessible collections, the material is carefully selected so that it is fully representative of our region – geographically, chronologically, historically, socially and culturally.

To make sure we are including the right material online, we are continuing to present screenings and events, organised with our four key partners, across Yorkshire.  We are adding new films in batches to coincide with launch events scheduled at each partner venue in 2010.  Keep up to date with these events via latest news and events.

finding out more about the films - from you!

You can browse YFA Online by decade, theme or area and discover more about each film from the ‘context’ sections which are crammed with useful information about the content of the film, whom it was made by and when it was made.  The site is free to use and if you register you can bookmark your favourites or add information and upload images relating to the films.

We are keen for users to provide information about the films, to add their local knowledge, memories and photographs to the website.  Whether it's about the films themselves, the area shown, or the subject matter please feel free to contribute your information via the ‘Open Space’ section which you will find on each film page.  Your valuable contributions will be used to add to our knowledge of the films and as a record for future generations.

yfa online learning

In addition to YFA Online, the YFA have created YFA Online Learning, a cross-curricular moving image resource for education practitioners, it is full of clips designed for educational use.  YFA Online Learning is an interactive site where teachers and learners can download and use the films creatively, uploading their own uses and activities onto the site for others to share.
