Heather Powell
Heather Powell has extensive experience in managing and operating media library services in television, both for the BBC and Independent Television. Trained as a professional librarian, she started her career in the public library sector, managing services in Colchester and North Essex. She first joined the BBC in 1980 working in their Film & Tape Library and as a Film Researcher on current affairs productions in London. In 1986 she took up the position of Head of Programme Libraries for Yorkshire Television based in Leeds, which included planning and designing new archive premises and developing the growth of commercial income via exploitation of the footage.
Despite "defecting" back to the BBC as Manager of Information and Archives (I&A) for those services in the north, and now basing herself in Lancashire (Manchester) rather than Yorkshire, her remit has included the news libraries and archive services in Leeds, Hull and Newcastle. Since September 2007, she has become English Regions Manager for all BBC Information & Archives services based outside London, and their lead for Project North, which involves the movement of major BBC departments to Salford in 2011. She hopes to continue to bring her range of archiving, commercial and collection management experience to advise and support the Yorkshire Film Archives objectives.
