depositing films
At the Yorkshire Film Archive we collect all types of moving images, amateur and professional. Home movies and videos form just as important a record of our heritage as do professional film productions. We are always interested to hear from anyone who has film or video made in or about the region, and can often advise on the best possible care of moving image material.
If you decide to bring film(s) to the Yorkshire Film Archive for us to look at, we will ask you to sign a Deposit Agreement, so that we have a record of the arrangement. If you would like to see an example, please view the Deposit Agreement at the bottom of this page. Your film(s) will be placed on temporary deposit and stored in our temperature and humidity controlled vaults while awaiting inspection.
Once the film(s) have been inspected for content and condition, YFA will get in touch and recommend one of the following courses of action.
If the film(s) are of interest to the YFA collections, an Acquisition Agreement will be completed setting out terms and conditions. This allows you to agree the terms under which the Archive will continue to care for your film(s). Ownership of the film(s) will always remain with the depositor. You can download an example of the Acquisition Agreement at the bottom of this page.
If the film(s) are not relevant to our remit, then either they will be returned to the depositor or, with the depositor's permission, offered to another film archive.
We regret that we cannot always offer copies of all of the films deposited with us. However we will arrange for a representative number of films from any one collection to be copied free of charge (up to one hour of footage), where physical condition allows.
