RetroVisions - Archiving Artists Film and Video

The Yorkshire Film Archive has recently completed a research study to assist future development in relation to archiving artists film and video made in or about the Yorkshire region.

The RetroVisions project included research into UK-wide and other approaches; investigation of current practice and resources available in the region; and the commissioning of expert advice on related legal and technical aspects for YFA.

The research process was coordinated by Olivia Stross and copies of her report to the Yorkshire Film Archive can be downloaded here. Click here to download the RetroVisions report.

The findings of the report highlight the need for better awareness of the complex issues facing artists, curators and film archivists interested in preserving contemporary work, and will be used to inform future developments.

As part of the project, several artists agreed to contribute statements about their working practice and their thoughts in relation to preservation and archival issues. These short case studies give some idea of the variety and complexity of work currently being produced.
