A Region on the Move
- changing transport and attitudes

A Region on the Move starts with rare footage from the early years of the 20th Century, showing life in the busy city centres of Leeds, York and Bradford, then traces the rise and demise of the electric tram, our growing concerns with road safety, and the building of the M62 motorway as the car established its domination in our lives.

Images such as these, showing the traffic-free city centres at the turn of the century, are a reminder of how much we now take the motor car for granted, as part of even the most familiar landmarks. This view of York Minster in the 1920s is taken from an early example of a travelogue.

As the century progressed, people began to enjoy motoring for pleasure, and here we see the popularilty of the moped, with a few of the enthusiasts attending the National Vespa Club of Britain's National Rally, in Leeds in 1959.
