A Region at Play

A Region at Play looks at how people spent their leisure time in Yorkshire during the 20th Century: when adults and children alike made their own entertainment and every community had its gala or carnival day, in the days before videos, computer games and foreign holidays.

In the early years of the century, popular entertainments often included processions and pageants, and the brass band captured here by a local cinematographer on nitrate stock , was a very familiar part of the local scene. This footage was taken in Elland, West Yorkshire.

Children were often at the heart of celebrations such as this event in Roundhay Park, Leeds, where local youngsters took part and enjoyed a day out
