A Region at Work
- in and around the workplace

A Region at Work looks at three industries that dominated life inYorkshire during the 20th Century. The coal mining, textiles and steel industries provided not just the jobs but an entire way of life; they shaped the identity of local communities.

Yorkshire's association with mining, textiles and steel is well known, but other businesses thrived and contributed to these industries. Here we see an image taken from footage recorded in 1931 at the CEAG factory in Barnsley, showing the production of light bulbs used in the safety helmets for coal miners.

Steel manufacture in Sheffield made it a world centre for the cutlery trade. This image is taken from a film recorded at the Parkgate Iron and Steel Works, near Rotherham, in 1951. Produced by Charles Chislett, a gifted amateur film maker, 'Men of Steel' is one of a number of his films now deposited with the Yorkshire Film Archive, providing an invaluable record of life in the region in the years between the late 1930s and the late 1950s.
