A Region at War
- life at home in war time

A Region at War looks at the impact of war in Yorkshire, from the patriotic fervour that greeted the outbreak of the First World War through to the impact on people's lives at home during the years of the Second World War.

The image here, taken from a film made about the Thornton Home Guard, in Bradford, shows a scene from daily life at home during the war years. Drilling and military activities were central, as part of the duties of the Local Defence Volunteers. This film was unusual for the time - colour film stock was rationed during the war years.

For the youngsters being evacuated from their homes to live with families in the coutryside, away from the dangers of bombing raids, life may have seemed like more of an adventure than a hardship. This group, filmed near Malton, seem to be enjoying the wintery weather.
