A Region Growing Up takes us back to our school days and reminds us how much has changed, both in schools and in higher education. New buildings and modern environments brought different ways of studying - and socialising - for young people across the region.

Leap Frog', made in 1900, was one of several films produced by Bamforth's of Holmfirth, a pioneering local production company; this image shows schoolboys at play. The company was originally involved in the production of Magic Lantern Slides and became better known for the saucy seaside postcards which they specialised in producing during the 1940s and '50s.

By the mid years of the century, ideas about children's education were changing radically and at the Quaker-run New Earswick School, near York, youngsters from rural communities were taught skills in a wide range of subjects including growing crops, gardening and driving, with particular reference to their future needs and employment (often in the Rowntree Factory).
